Species Profile
Periplaneta americana
Despite their name, American cockroaches originated in Africa and were transported globally via trade routes. In the Western Cape, they thrive in warm, moist environments — sewers, subfloors, and commercial kitchens. At 35–40mm, they are the largest common pest cockroach and can fly when temperatures exceed 29°C.
Biology & Behaviour
American cockroaches are highly mobile and can travel 50+ metres from harborage sites to feeding areas. They carry 33 types of bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli, 6 parasitic worms, and at least 7 human pathogens. Females produce egg cases (oothecae) containing 14–16 eggs each, depositing up to 90 oothecae in a lifetime.
Signs of Infestation
Reddish-brown cockroaches 35–40mm in length, especially at night
Cylindrical, dark brown droppings with ridged sides (1–2mm)
Musky, oily odour in enclosed spaces
Oothecae (dark brown capsules ~8mm) in hidden areas
Shed exoskeletons near harborage sites
Clinical Organicism Protocol
The Eco Pestelence 4-phase intervention methodology, calibrated specifically for american cockroaches.
Nocturnal inspection with UV torches to identify harborage clusters. Monitoring glue boards placed in sewers, subfloors and utility areas for 72-hour population assessment.
Drain treatment with enzyme-based bio-films to eliminate sewer entry points. Structural gap sealing with fire-rated sealant around all pipe penetrations.
High-concentration gel bait (Imidacloprid/Fipronil matrix) deployed in harbourages. Residual insect growth regulator (IGR) applied to dark, moist zones disrupting juvenile development cycles.
10-Day Elimination Programme
The initial treatment eliminates active pests while eggs continue hatching over the following days — newly hatched pests contact the residual treatment, progressively clearing the infestation within ~10 days.
Quarterly drain maintenance treatment. Borate-based barrier along slab perimeter. Monthly monitoring board checks with population trend reporting.
Eco Commitment
Our drain-focused IGR treatments prevent reproduction without affecting surface environments. We avoid organophosphate compounds entirely in favour of targeted neo-nicotinoid gels.
