Red-headed cockroaches (Deropeltis erythrocephala), also known as bush cockroaches, are large, distinctive cockroaches native to South Africa. Males reach up to 60mm and females up to 50mm. They are easily recognised by their glossy black bodies and reddish-brown head and legs. Unlike household pest cockroaches, they are primarily outdoor insects attracted to lights at night and are considered harmless to humans.

Biology & Behaviour

Oriental cockroaches are slower-moving than other species and cannot climb smooth vertical surfaces. They are highly cold-tolerant, surviving at temperatures as low as 0°C. Females produce oothecae containing 16 eggs, deposited near food sources. Their preference for outdoor and peridomestic environments makes them a gateway species — entering structures from gardens and drainage systems.

Signs of Infestation

Infestation Indicators

Large (20–25mm), shiny dark brown to black cockroaches in moist areas

Strong, musty odour near drains, sumps, and damp spaces

Oothecae near floor drains or in leaf litter close to foundations

Activity peaks in late winter/spring in the Western Cape

Sightings in bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements

Clinical Organicism Protocol

Remediation Protocol

The Eco Pestelence 4-phase intervention methodology, calibrated specifically for red-headed cockroaches.

01
Phase 01

Detection

Moisture mapping of the property to identify high-risk zones. Drain inspection with mirror probe. External perimeter survey of leaf litter, mulch beds and compost areas.

02
Phase 02

Isolation

Drain mesh installation on all accessible drains. Reduction of external moisture sources and debris harborage identified. Gap sealing at pipe penetrations through foundations.

03
Phase 03

Neutralization

Drain treatment with insecticidal foam and enzyme biofilm destroyer. Granular bait (Fipronil-based) applied to external harbourage areas. Internal gel bait in confirmed indoor harborage zones.

10-Day Elimination Programme

The initial treatment eliminates active pests while eggs continue hatching over the following days — newly hatched pests contact the residual treatment, progressively clearing the infestation within ~10 days.

04
Phase 04

Shielding

Seasonal external perimeter treatment (pre-winter). Drain maintenance enzyme treatment bi-monthly. Garden moisture management advisory to reduce peridomestic harborage.

Eco Commitment

Our enzyme-based drain treatments serve a dual purpose — eliminating cockroach harborage while breaking down organic matter that causes drain blockages, without harsh chemicals entering the stormwater system.
