Feral pigeons (Columba livia) and common starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are the primary pest bird species in Western Cape urban areas. Pest birds cause significant property damage through acidic droppings that corrode building materials, block gutters and drainage systems, and create serious health hazards through the transmission of Histoplasmosis, Cryptococcosis and Psittacosis.

Biology & Behaviour

Feral pigeons roost and nest on building ledges, roof voids and solar panel arrays, returning repeatedly to established sites. A pair can raise 4–6 broods per year. Starlings nest in roof cavities and can establish colonies of hundreds. Bird droppings have a pH of 3–4.5, rapidly degrading stone, metal and paintwork. Accumulated nesting material creates fire hazards and harbours secondary insect pests.

Signs of Infestation

Infestation Indicators

Accumulation of droppings on ledges, vehicles and pathways

Visible nesting material in gutters, roof voids and under solar panels

Persistent roosting on window sills, parapets and roof edges

Blocked gutters and drainage from nesting debris

Secondary insect infestations (bird mites, flies) associated with nests

Clinical Organicism Protocol

Remediation Protocol

The Eco Pestelence 4-phase intervention methodology, calibrated specifically for bird removal.

01
Phase 01

Detection

Full roof and facade survey to identify all roosting and nesting sites. Assessment of structural vulnerabilities — open soffits, gaps in fascia, and exposed roof voids.

02
Phase 02

Isolation

Removal of all existing nests and droppings with full biohazard decontamination. Identification of all access points for physical exclusion.

03
Phase 03

Neutralization

Installation of anti-roosting spike systems on ledges and parapets. Netting exclusion of roof voids and open soffits. Acoustic and visual deterrents deployed for large open areas.

10-Day Elimination Programme

The initial treatment eliminates active pests while eggs continue hatching over the following days — newly hatched pests contact the residual treatment, progressively clearing the infestation within ~10 days.

04
Phase 04

Shielding

Annual inspection of deterrent systems for wear and integrity. Gutter cleaning and drainage check to remove accumulated nesting material. Decontamination treatment of high-droppings-accumulation zones.

Eco Commitment

Eco Pestelence uses only humane deterrent methods — no poisoning or trapping. Our exclusion systems redirect birds to natural roosting sites without harm.
